{"id":1997,"date":"2010-11-23T19:14:27","date_gmt":"2010-11-23T11:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/?p=1997"},"modified":"2011-01-04T21:14:12","modified_gmt":"2011-01-04T13:14:12","slug":"individual-beef-and-red-wine-pies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/individual-beef-and-red-wine-pies\/","title":{"rendered":"Individual beef and red wine pies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2003\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/?attachment_id=2003\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2062\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/?attachment_id=2062\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2062\" title=\"Beef and red wine pie\" src=\"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-141110-x2-with-C-575x490.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-141110-x2-with-C-575x490.jpg 575w, http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-141110-x2-with-C-300x256.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-141110-x2-with-C-150x128.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-141110-x2-with-C-400x341.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-141110-x2-with-C.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have mentioned in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/?m=201011\">my recent posts<\/a> that G and I have been making a very conscious effort to eat healthy and exercise a little more.\u00a0 This includes making sure we consume lots of fruits and vegetables into our daily meals, something that we have always been very good at doing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just how much good eating we have been doing of late was highlighted recently when G completed a personal health check questionnaire through his occupational health and safety team at work.\u00a0 One of the questions related to the 2 fruits 5 vegetables a day theory and when we actually added everything that he (we) consume from those food groups in a day, this would be the minimum.\u00a0 After completing the questions, everyone was asked to pass in their form for evaluation and those with the highest scores relating to living a healthy lifestyle were awarded prizes.\u00a0 G was fortunate enough to be placed joint first and was given a bag full of goodies which included a \u201cHealthy Eating\u201d recipe book (yippee!).\u00a0 I flicked through it and found some great ideas including these delicious little pies.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ce2307;\">individual beef and red wine pies (recipe adapted from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heartfoundation.org.au\/recipes\/Pages\/IndividualBeefandRedWinePies.aspx?mt=Dinner\"><em><span style=\"color: #ce2307;\">Heart Foundation<\/span><\/em><\/a><span style=\"color: #ce2307;\">)<br \/>\nmakes\u00a04-6\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #346c17;\">Ingredients<br \/>\n<\/span>2 teaspoons\u00a0olive or vegetable\u00a0oil<br \/>\n1 large onion, chopped<br \/>\n2 cloves garlic, crushed<br \/>\n1kg beef chuck steak trimmed of all fat and cubed<br \/>\n2 tablespoons plain flour<br \/>\n200g Swiss brown mushrooms, quartered<br \/>\n2 tablespoons fresh thyme chopped<br \/>\n2 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped<br \/>\n2 sheets canola puff pastry defrosted<br \/>\n1 tablespoons reduced fat milk<br \/>\n375ml red wine<br \/>\n375ml reduced salt beef stock<br \/>\n2 carrots thinly sliced<br \/>\n2\u00a0tablespoons reduced salt tomato paste\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #346c17;\">Preparation<br \/>\n<\/span>Preheat the oven to 200\u00b0C. You will need\u00a04-6 x 2 cup capacity ovenproof pie dishes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Heat the oil in a large pot, add the onion and cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes or until golden. Add the garlic and the beef and cook for 5 minutes until the beef is browned.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>Add the flour and tomato paste and cook for a further 2 minutes, stirring constantly.\u00a0 Stir in the red wine and stock and bring to the boil. Add the carrots, mushrooms and chopped thyme.\u00a0 Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for about 1 hour then remove the lid and cook for a further 45 minutes until the beef is tender and the sauce is reduced and thickened.\u00a0 Stir through the parsley, transfer to a bowl and allow the filling to cool completely.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Using the top of a pie dish as a guide, cut 4-6 circles from the pastry, about 2cm larger than the dish.\u00a0 Spoon the cooled filling into the dishes.\u00a0 Brush the edges of each pastry circle with a little water then cover the dishes (damp side down); pressing the pastry to the side of the dish to seal.\u00a0 Cut a small cross in the top of each pie, insert a sprig of thyme and lightly brush with milk.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden and the filling is hot. Serve the pies with mashed potato and steamed beans.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #346c17;\">My tips\/alterations:<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0*I used reduced fat puff pastry.\u00a0 By the time this was cooked I only had enough mixture for 4 pies even though the original recipe said it would make 6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_ctl05__ControlWrapper_RichHtmlField\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2004\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/?attachment_id=2004\"><\/a><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2063\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/?attachment_id=2063\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2063\" title=\"Beef and red wine pie\" src=\"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-1-141110-x2-with-C-575x486.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-1-141110-x2-with-C-575x486.jpg 575w, http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-1-141110-x2-with-C-300x253.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-1-141110-x2-with-C-150x126.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-1-141110-x2-with-C-400x338.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.foodfourthought.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Blog-BRP-1-141110-x2-with-C.jpg 807w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>ease: 7\/10.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0These aren&#8217;t too difficult; there\u00a0are just a few elements to making them.\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong>prep time:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>30mins.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>cooking time: 2 hours 25mins. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>total: 2 hours 55mins.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>taste: 8.5\/10.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0These were delicious.\u00a0 The flavour that was in the filling was as good as any winter stew and the pastry was the crowning glory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">G had only one complaint.\u00a0 He considered these to be a hotpot rather than a pie.\u00a0 He said if they had of been a proper pie they would have scored 10.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>would I make it again:\u00a0\u00a0Yes<\/strong>\u00a0and maybe try and make them into a &#8220;proper pie&#8221; \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have mentioned in my recent posts that G and I have been making a very conscious effort to eat healthy and exercise a little more.
